This package contains 11 audio CD's and a copy of the each speaker's handouts for the Spring 2008 WANP/Bastyr conference (originally held May 3, 2008).

Description:

This home study explores the new realm of prescriptive authority recently attained for NDs in the state of Washington.  Also, it will provide you with the regulated information required by the Department of Health to obtain a DEA number.   Upon sucessful completion of the course, the form necessary to apply for your DEA number will be sent to you along with you certificate of completion. 

The following information will be included :
-Patient selection and therapeutics education
-Problem identification & assessment
-Knowledge of interactions
-Recognition and management of complications and untoward reactions
-Education in pain management and drug seeking behaviors
-Prescribing protocols and insights; codeine, testosterone and steroids
-Getting your DEA Number—how and what to expect.

Other topics included are: Hyperlipidemia/HTN, Antidepressants/Anxiety, Asthma/Cough, Musculoskeletal and Diabetes

Instructor:

Melissa Weakland, MD, received her medical degree from University of Washington in June 2001.  She did her residency at the University of Rochester, Highland Hospital in New York and was also a Clinical Fellow and an instructor there.  Dr. Weakland is currently in practice in Ballard, Washington.

Dawn Ipsen, PharmD, graduated from the University of Washington with a Doctorate of Pharmacy in 2001 where she received the Dean’s Outstanding Service Award.  She has been working in pharmaceutical compounding since 1999 and is now the compounding lab manager at Kusler's Pharmacy.  She holds memberships with the National Community Pharmacists Association, American College of Veterinary Pharmacists, and the Washington State Pharmacy Association and is an Affiliate Faculty Member of the University of Washington School of Pharmacy.  She is a Pharmacist Preceptor for the Washington State Board of Pharmacy and teaches Pharmacy Interns and Externs from both the University of Washington and Washington State University.  She was named a Drug Topics Magazine Outstanding Pharmacist of the Year in 2002.  Dawn has presented on the topic of pharmaceutical compounding to physician, patient, and peer groups; most notably to the Professional Compounding Centers of America Regional Seminar, Washington Association of Naturopathic Physicians, Washington State Podiatric Medical Association and the University of Washington Pharmacy School Students.  She is dedicated to helping practitioners find solutions to medication problems through custom compounded medications.

Robert Martinez, DC, has been active practice on the Eastside of Seattle since 1981. He graduated from Western States Chiropractic College in 1981; from Bastyr University with a degree in Naturopathic Medicine in 1985 and was board certified as in Chiropractic Orthopedics (DABCO) in 1986.  He is a past faculty member and is the Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees of Bastyr University.  Dr. Martinez was a post-graduate faculty member of Los Angeles college of Chiropractic in the Orthopedics program for over ten years.  Dr. Martinez authored a chapter on manual medicine in the Textbook of Natural Medicine by Pizzorno and Murray.  He has been a consultant for insurance companies and independent practitioner associations (IPA’s) and is an Assistant Medical Director for Premera Blue Cross.

Lise Anderheggen-Leif, ARNP, received her associate nursing degree in 1980 from Central Oregon Community College and received her BSN in 1986 from Seattle Pacific University. After working as a hospital critical care nurse for 10 years she went to the University of Washington and obtain her Master's Degree as a Family Nurse Practitioner in 1990. Since then Lise has worked in local Seattle area clinics providing primary care and is a trained Foot Reflexologist. In 2005 she opened her own practice in order to provide more comprehensive and integrated healthcare to her patients. She currently shares office space at the University Health Clinic with two Naturopathic Physicians and an Acupuncturist.

David Kiefer, MD, is a board-certified family physician with licenses in Washington, Arizona, and Wisconsin. In Seattle, he supervises family medicine residents at a homeless youth clinic, teaches naturopathic medical students at Bastyr University, and works in an urgent care. He completed a fellowship at the Program in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona, where he is now an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine.  Dr. Kiefer graduated from the University of Wisconsin Medical School in Madison, Wisconsin, and completed his residency training at the Swedish Medical Center in Seattle, Washington.  His research and teaching interests include ethnobotany, especially in Latin America, and the clinical applications of evidence-based herbal medicine.

Amanda Brimhall, ND is a leading expert in hormone balancing. Dr. Brimhall works with patients to improve health and vitality using a combination of naturopathic methods and bio-identical hormone replacement. Waterfront Wellness, her private practice in Kirkland, focuses on hormone optimization and longevity medicine.
